Biomatter designs enzymes that never existed in nature - proteins that were, until recently, impossible to create. They're already at work in health, food, agriculture, and sustainable manufacturing: companies like BASF, Thermo Fisher, and Kirin build their products on enzymes we designed.
Behind this is our platform, which combines state-of-the-art AI with our own wet laboratory. Algorithms design new proteins, the lab builds and tests them, and every experiment makes the next design better. That's why our team spans software engineers, AI researchers, and scientists at the bench.
The role
You'll join the laboratory team as a junior scientist, working alongside senior scientists, bioinformaticians and computer scientists to produce and characterize the proteins coming off the computational side.
Day to day that means hands-on molecular biology and biochemistry: cloning and mutagenesis, expressing and purifying designed proteins, and running the assays that tell us how they behave. You'll start out running experiments planned together with a senior scientist, and take on more of the planning yourself as you find your feet.
It's a good place to learn quickly. Your results go straight back into the next round of designs, so you see the consequence of your work in weeks rather than years. You'll touch a wider range of techniques than you would in most labs, and you'll have experienced people supporting you.
What you will do
Protein production and characterization
Express and purify wild type and designed proteins.
Carry out cloning and mutagenesis to build the constructs each design round needs.
Run the assays that characterize how those proteins behave, and help refine those assays as we go.
Execute biochemistry and molecular biology experiments carefully and reproducibly - taking on more of the experimental planning as you gain confidence.
Keep detailed and accurate records of all lab work.
Working with the team
Work with computational colleagues to close the design-test loop, so the data we generate is the data the next design round needs.
Analyze your results and present them to the team.
Help turn what works into documented, repeatable protocols as the lab standardizes and automates.
Support the build-out of medium and high throughput workflows as we automate.
What we are looking for
Master's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology or a related field.
Hands-on experience with recombinant protein expression and purification.
Hands-on experience with molecular cloning and mutagenesis.
Careful, reproducible bench technique, and the judgement to notice when a result doesn't look right.
Analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
Intrinsic motivation and accountability
Organised and dependable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Excellent written and oral English.
Nice to have
Theoretical or practical knowledge of enzyme kinetics, or experience developing enzymatic assays.
Experience with analytical HPLC/MS.
Exposure to high-throughput screening or lab automation.
Familiarity with AKTA chromatography systems, or experience developing protein purification protocols (ion exchange, gel filtration).
Experience with recombinant protein production in Bacillus spp., P. pastoris or S. cerevisiae.
Comfort with scripting for data analysis, or using AI tools in your work.
What we offer
Salary: 2500-2900 EUR gross per month, depending on experience, plus private health insurance.
